I first heard of Dorian Gray many years ago when I was still on college (I actually graduated in English linguistics) and it’s been my favorite book ever since. So much so I referenced it in a couple of my art before. Now I do it once again as a collage. The boy on center is Dave Willer and I believe he was photographed by Bob Mizer (take that with a grain of salt... I am not sure of that information). Around him, many elements referencing the story and its themes. I will print a poster of this to hang in my room someday.

Eu ouvi falar em Dorian Gray muitos anos atrás quando eu ainda estava na faculdade (sou formado em Letras — Inglês, na verdade) e tem sido meu livro favorito desde então. Tanto que eu o referenciei na minha arte algumas vezes antes. Agora, referencio mais uma vez, só que como uma colagem. O rapaz no centro é Dave Willer e eu acredito que ele tenha sido fotografado pelo Bob Mizer (não leve essa informação como absoluta verdade, pois eu não tenho certeza). Ao redor dele, vários elementos que tem significado para a história e os temas. Talvez eu faça um poster dessa arte e cole na parede do meu quarto algum dia.

Last week, I introduced you to Matinta Pereira and today I introduce you to Cuca. She’s one of the most recognizable figures in Brazilian folklore thanks to “Sitio do Pica-pau Amarelo” book series by Monteiro Lobato (although her origins are way older and from Portuguese roots). She’s known as a humanoid alligator witch who lives in the forest. TV Globo adapted Lobato’s book into children TV shows for the first time back in the late 70s and then rebooted it in the early 2000s—which is arguably the most iconic version of the show (Cuca even became an international meme star). Since she’s apart of the hall of fame of Globo iconic villains, I wanted to embrace her Odete Roitman cuntiness levels.

This is another remake of an art from years ago. I was inspired by the Mexican culture, the beautiful celebration of Día de los Muertos and La Santa Muerte. It also happens I was obsessed with Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly, so I thought of recreating Santa Muerte wearing Barbra’s iconic, opulent outfit in the musical. Now, here’s a new, darker version of that art.

Este é outro remake de uma arte de anos atrás. Eu me inspirei pela cultura mexicana, pela linda celebração Día de los Muertos e pela Santa Muerte. Acontece que eu também estava obcecado pela Barbra Streisand em Hello Dolly, então eu pensei em recriar a santa Muerte usando o figurino icônico e opulente que a Barbra usa no musical. Agora, aqui vai uma versão mais dark daquela arte.

I'm not sure if it's an unpopular thing to say, but here it goes: "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is an awful franchise and it doesn't even circle back to campy. Furthermore, they should have never allowed sequel movies to happen—much worse so many reboots. It's not a good movie, not a good plot, although I really like that cast and you know I simply cannot resist Freddie Prinze Jr.—he's still as dreamy as ever!

Since the movie needed a little campy fixing, I decided to give it myself and expose what Ray and Barry really did last summer... if you know what I mean... *wink*

Eu não tenho se essa é uma opinião impopular, mas lá vai: "Eu Sei O Que Vocês Fizeram No Verão Passado" uma franquia horrorosa e sequer se encaixa na máxima que algo tão ruim pode virar camp. Além do mais, eles jamais deveriam ter permitido tantas sequências e reboots. Não é um filme bom, não tem um bom enredo, mas eu gosto do elenco... E você sabe que não dá pra resistir ao Freddie Prinze Jr.—ele continua tão lindo como sempre.

Já que o filme precisava de um ajuste camp, eu decidi dá-lo eu mesmo e expor o que de fato o Ray e o Barry fizeram no verão passado... se é que vocês me entendem... *piscada*

Today we wrap up week three of this Halloween marathon with a piece that means a lot to me. It took me a few days to get it just right, but I really love both the concept and the final result.

You know Twilight is my guilty pleasure movie saga — and there’s something so teasing about the fact that Edward always takes Bella to the woods, especially while she’s still human. But you know what else happens in the woods? Gay cruising. (It’s even legal in several parts of Europe, where local governments have reportedly set aside safe areas for it — or so I’ve read.)

So, naturally, my campy brain got inspired and made those two worlds collide: what if there were a gang of vampires who turned gay men cruising in the forest into horny vampires themselves? Kinda iconic — and I’m totally here for it.

Hoje nós encerramos a semana 3 dessa maratona de Halloween com uma obra que significa muito para mim. Eu passei alguns dias acertando e ajustando ela, mas eu realmente amo o conceito e o resultado final.

Todos já sabem que Crepúsculo é meu filme guilty pleasure — e há algo de excitante no fato que o Edward sempre leva a Bella para as partes mais isoladas do bosque, especialmente quando ela ainda é humana. Mas sabe o que também acontece no bosque? Gays caçando. (É até legal em partes da Europa, onde o governo local reservou áreas seguras dedicadas a isso—ou pelo menos foi o que eu li).

Então, naturalmente, meu cérebro campy se inspirou e juntou esses dois mundos: E se existisse uma gangue de vampiros que transformasse homens gays caçando na floresta em vampiros tarados? Meio que icônico e eu sou totalmente a favor disso.

Whenever demonic possessions are depicted in visual art, they’re almost always shown as something plain ugly — people decaying from the inside out, because the devil is supposedly a filthy, evil creature. But you know what? I’m done with that kind of imagery, and I refuse t put it in own work.

That's why, for this piece, I have decided to do a romantic and lustful possession. A very erotic, sensual, camp and almost loving relation between our world and the supernatural. The devil may be ugly, but he knows how to treat his bitches.

Quando as possessões demoníacas são retratadas nas artes visuais, elas quase sempre são mostradas como algo feito — pessoas apodrecendo de dentro para fora porque o diaboo deve ser uma criatura imunda e malvada. Mas quer saber de uma coisa? Eu estou cansado desse tipo de iconografia e eu me recuso a incluí-la no meu trabalho.

Por isso que, para essa arte, eu decidi fazer algo romântico e lascivo. Uma relação erótica, sensual camp e quase terna entre o nosso mundo e o sobrenatural. O diabo pode ser feio, mas ele sabe como tratar uma vadia.

From Brazilian folklore — especially from the North of the country — Matinta Pereira is witch often portrayed as an old hag witch who transforms into a bird (usually an owl) at night. Her presence is seen as a bad omen: if she lands on your roof and lets out her piercing cry, you’d better prepare coffee and tobacco right away as her offering. Otherwise, misfortune is sure to follow.

But for today’s piece, forget the old hag. Here, Matinta is irresistible. She’s the one who must have invented the coffee-and-cigarettes diet Judy Garland swore by. If you look closely, you’ll see she already carries her own offerings in hand — a witch both seductive and dangerous, wrapped in smoke and moonlight. But maybe, she wants more than just cigarretes and coffee, maybe she wants to steal your husband, as well!

Nas tradições folclóricas brasileiras — sobretudo do norte do país — Matinta Pereira é uma bruxa velha que, à noite, se transforma em pássaro (geralmente uma coruja). Sua presença é sinal de mau-presságio: se ela pousar no telhado e soltar o grito estridente, trate logo de preparar café e tabaco como oferenda. Caso contrário, o mau agouro é inevitável.

Mas, para a obra de hoje, nada de bruxas velhas. Na minha interpretação, Matinta é atraente. Foi ela quem deve ter inventado a dieta de café e cigarros que até Judy Garland seguiu. Repare bem: ela mesma já carrega suas oferendas nas mãos — uma bruxa tão sedutora quanto perigosa, envolta em fumaça e luar. Talvez ela queira mais que só cigarros e café, talvez ela também queira roubar seu marido!

I will forever defend early John Waters films as true horror masterpieces. For the audiences who witnessed their original screenings, it’s clear they provoked far more shock and disturbance than most mainstream, conventionally accepted horror movies ever did. That’s precisely why no other camp icon could fit this day better than Divine. And since Female Trouble is my favorite collaboration between Waters and Divine, it felt only natural to honor them through today’s piece.

Eu vou eternamente defender os primeiros filmes do John Water como verdadeiras obras de terror. Para quem estava lá para as exibições originais, é claro que eles provocaram mais choque que vários filmes convencionais e mainstream de terror. É precisamente por isso que nenhum outro ícone camp teria servido tão bem quanto a Devine. Já que Female Trouble é minha colaboração favorita da dupla Waters-Divine, é natural que a arte de hoje fosse em homenagem a eles.

The Bloody Mary urban legend has countless versions around the world. I’m not sure about the rest of Latin America, but in Brazil, she’s known as “A Loira do Banheiro” — literally, “the Bathroom Blonde.” In this version, she’s the ghost of a blonde woman who can be evoked by flushing the toilet three times and repeating her name in front of a mirror, also three times.

This modern take on the story became especially popular in the 2000s thanks to a TV show that dramatized urban legends from all over the country. Anyway... today’s piece was inspired by that tale — O Loiro do Banheirão. (There’s no proper English word for banheirão, which basically refers to cruising in public restrooms.) So beware: every time you go cruising in a public toilet, the ghost of a blonde twink might be watching you. It’s up to you like the idea of a voyeur ghost.

A lenda da Loira do Banheiro tem versões espalhadas pelo mundo. Eu não sei se no resto da América Latina eles conhecem a mesma versão do nosso conto, mas aqui no Brasil ela ganhou força nas versões modernas que ficaram populares nos anos 2000, graças ao programa do Gugu, que dramatizava lendas urbanas de todo o país.

Nessa história, a Loira do Banheiro é o fantasma de uma mulher loira, sempre vestida de branco, que pode ser invocada ao puxar a descarga três vezes e repetir o nome dela diante do espelho — também três vezes.

Foi inspirado nesse conto que eu criei a arte de hoje: O Loiro do Banheirão. Então, cuidado: todas as vezes que você faz um banheirão, o fantasma de um twink loiro pode estar te observando. Cabe a você decidir se isso é uma coisa boa ou ruim.

I can only imagine being a kid in the U.S. back in 1983 — one rich enough to have cable TV — and getting to watch the premiere of Thriller on MTV, with that giant logo probably taking up a quarter of the screen. Forty-two years later, MTV has become almost a nostalgic artifact of the past, but Michael Jackson remains a game changer yet to be surpassed.

Imagino alguém nos Estados Unidos, em 1983, com dinheiro o suficiente para ter TV a cabo e assistir à estreia do clipe de “Thriller” na MTV — com o logo da emissora provavelmente ocupando um quarto da tela. Quarenta e dois anos depois, a MTV já é quase uma lembrança nostálgica do passado, mas o trabalho de Michael Jackson continua sendo um divisor de águas ainda insuperável.

#AWickedHalloween Day 14: Cristina Saboya

You had to be there to understand how everyone in Brazil was glued to their TVs around 6 p.m. in 2005 to watch Alma Gêmea — a spiritualistic telenovela about two cousins, Luna and Cristina, and the man they both loved, Rafael. Luna marries him and inherits the family jewels, while Cristina, consumed by jealousy, schemes to steal those jewels and sells her soul to the devil to have Rafael. But her plan goes terribly wrong: Luna is killed, only to reincarnate as an Indigenous woman named Serena, determined to continue her love story with Rafael.

Luna/Serena and Rafael's bond proves stronger than death — and even the devil. In the end, after tragedy strikes and everyone dies, the devil himself comes to drag Cristina to hell in one of the most iconic scenes in Brazilian TV history. It’s been living rent-free in Brazilian Pop Culture. Since Alma Gêmea is a telenovela so close to my heart, I couldn’t help but pay tribute to it.

Se você me perguntar, eu vou defender a Cristina e dizer que as jóias da família deveriam ser dela, SIM! Afinal, a Luna conseguiu o Rafael e a vida perfeita. Mas já que a única opção dela foi vender a própria alma ao Diabo, só posso agradecê-la por servir um dos momentos mais icônicos da teledramaturgia brasileira — a qual eu homenageio hoje.

On Oct. 13, 2015–exactly ten years ago—my favorite episode of “Scream Queens” would first air. In “Haunted House” we were introduced to “Chanel-o-ween”, that glamourous time of the year when Chanel Oberlin would grace the life of the losers who idolized her. 

The whole bit was a parody of those videos Taylor Swift used to make for her own minions back in the day. Some even say Ryan Murphy threw it in as a little revenge after Taylor reportedly turned down a role on the show. Very messy and very iconic.

Anyways, here’s to a happy Chanel-o-ween!

One day, I woke up and thought: What if Frankestein was the star of a jeans campaign like the ones they had in the 90s? Then this piece was born!

A quick back story: When I first finished this piece, I didn't really like his face... So I created a copy of the PSD file to have some changes—was not successful at all. Then I decided to go work on other pieces for Halloween and when I came back to Frankestein, I realized he should be weird and kinda ugly. But as P!nk would say: He's fucking perfect!!

Uma manhã, eu acordei e pensei: E se o Frankestein fosse a estrela de um comercial de jeans como aqueles que eles faziam nos anos 90? E essa arte nasceu!

Então eu decidi trabalhar em outras artes para o Halloween e quando eu voltei para o Frankestein, percebi que ele devia ser estranho e feioso. Mas como a P!nk diria: "he's fucking perfect!"

Once again, I have decided to go outside for this Halloween season.

Theda Bara is among the very first superstars the pop culture industry (or should I say the movie industry) fabricated on similar grounds to our current pop stars. Unfortunately, very few of her movies survived, but that doesn't mean she can't be as loved (or referenced) as she's ever been! Theda is a face, a body and a presence that remains unmatched 100 years later. I salute this gothic icon who opened the way for women who followed.

Mais uma vez, eu decidi pensar fora da casinha pra essa temporada.

Theda Bara está entre as primeiras superstars que a indústria da cultura pop (ou, nesse caso, a indústria do cinema) fabricou nos padrões que se assemelham às estrelas pop que temos hoje em dia. Infelizmente, poucos filmes dela sobreviveram ao tempo, mas isso não significa que ela não possa ser amada (ou referenciada) da forma como ela sempre foi. Theda é um rosto, um corpo e uma presença que até hoje, mais de 100 anos depois, permanece inigualavel. Eu saúdo esse ícone gótico que abriu o caminho para as mulheres que vieram depois.

For my non-brazilian folks, I'd like you to meet Claudia Raia—one of the most iconic brazilian actresses of all time. Mind you she even played Sally Bowles in the Brazilian stageplay adaptation of Cabaret and got approval from Liza herself.

Anyways, back in 2003, she starred and the iconic telenovela "O Beijo do Vampiro", playing Mina, a parisian actress who was turned into a vampire in the 19th century. To make a long novela short: SHE IS MOMENT, yall! So I'm so glad to reference her in this day.

Eu não preciso fazer apresentações sobre quem é Claudia Raia e muito menos sobre o que foi "O Beijo do Vampiro"—a não ser que desde Natasha, a televisão brasileira não via vampira tão icônica. Desde então, nunca mais tivemos outra.
